Miscellaneous Information
William was born on 24 February 1919 in Sovereign, Saskatchewan. His father was a farmer and both parents were born in USA. He had one sister, Viola Lucille. The School he attended was Driver 1925-1933, grades 1-8. He also took a Correspondence course in Driver during 1935 for grades 9 and 10. During 1942 he went on the W.E.T.P pre-enlistment course, in Regina. His sport interests were baseball and swimming. William worked at home on his father’s farm from 1935 until enlistment on 29 May 1942. |
He embarked from Canada on 16 July 1943, arriving 3 PRC, 23 July 1943, 11 (P) AFU on 31 August 1943, 24 OTU 11 January 1944, 61 Base. 8 April 1944 and 419 Squadron on 19 May 1944. He lost his life just over three weeks later. |
Lacey Lake, Saskatchewan was named in his honour. |

Operation | Cambrai- to bomb railway facilities. Part of a 671 aircraft force to further hamper lines of communications leading to the Normandy area. Cambrai and Caen attacks were scattered but Amiens, Arras and Poitiers were accurate. 23 aircraft were Lost (3.4%) including that of Charles Mynarski VC, the subject of the Canadian Lancaster 'Vera'. |
